Nico Rosberg was fastest during final practice for the Spanish Grand Prix as Mercedes led the rest of the field by 1.3 seconds.
The two Mercedes drivers of Rosberg and Lewis Hamilton traded fastest times 1.5s clear of the rest on hard tyres before both switched to mediums and Rosberg set a best lap of 1:25.887. Hamilton was unable to respond due to a yellow flag – caused by Max Chilton – which scuppered his medium tyre run and he ended up 0.8s slower than his team-mate.
Fernando Alonso was third quickest on a 1:27.188 just ahead of Felipe Massa's Williams, while Romain Grosjean enjoyed an impressive recovery to set the fifth fastest time. Grosjean complained of a continuation of the braking issues which had plagued him on Friday, but after overcoming those early issues he set a best lap of 1:27.682.
Kevin Magnussen was sixth for McLaren and just 0.002s ahead of Daniel Ricciardo's Red Bull, with Jenson Button, Pastor Maldonado and Sebastian Vettel rounding out the top ten.
Vettel was pushing hard as he attempted to make up for time lost on Friday – when a wiring loom issue limited him to just four laps in total – highlighted when he ran off-track on the exit of Turn 4 on his first medium tyre lap.
While Alonso showed well near the top of the timesheets, Kimi Raikkonen languished down in 14th place, just ahead of the two Force Indias and Saubers.
Max Chilton ended his running in the gravel for the second practice session in a row as he locked up in to Turn 5 and slid wide with ten minutes of FP3 remaining, forcing Hamilton to abort his medium tyre run. Kamui Kobayashi was another driver to take a trip through the gravel late in the session as he ran wide at Turn 7 but was able to rejoin.
