Renault feels it has almost completely recovered from its difficult start to the season, according to head of track operations Remi Taffin.

The engine manufacturer has made steady progress since suffering poor reliability and performance during testing, which culminated in its second podium of the season in Barcelona as Daniel Ricciardo finished third for Red Bull. While there is still work to be done to get 100% out of the current power unit, Taffin said Renault is close to doing so and has narrowed the performance deficit to its rivals.

"Overall we've made good progress this weekend with energy and fuel management and the driveability of the Power Unit has been improved," Taffin said. "I'd say we are about 90% of the way on our recovery now, with final refinements to come. We'll test these next week and are confident we'll introduce another step forward for Monaco."

And looking at each team's individual result, Taffin feels Renault achieved its realistic targets by finishing third and fourth with both Red Bulls.

"A podium for Daniel and a strong, fighting fourth for Sebastian is as much as we could have hoped for this weekend. The Mercedes obviously have a very good overall package and are out in front, but there is very little between the next four teams and we saw some great battles for position. This in itself shows that the engine race is a lot closer than at previous races and there is everything to play for.

"On another note it is rewarding to see Lotus back in the fight on genuine pace. Unfortunately for Toro Rosso and Caterham though the speed just wasn't there and it was difficult to make any headway."

This is part of why I don't like the engine freeze (or a mandated engine format, but that's a different debate). Extenuating circumstances always allow for non-enforcement of this "rule" and it's kind of dumb. It's not like the manufacturers aren't spending money on developments anyway, and the allowed ones are stupidly small and cost inefficient.
