Charles Pic said his return to driving during the Spain in-season test was "a very good day" as he set the second fastest time.

Having not driven a modern F1 car since the final grand prix of last season - when he was driving for Caterham - Pic finally got his first opportunity for Lotus in Barcelona. A late lap looked set to leave him with the quickest time before Max Chilton's supersoft effort, but Pic said it had been a successful day for both himself and Lotus.

"The programme was quite big in the morning, then because of the weather we had to make it a bit smaller," Pic said. "The morning was not ideal because it was raining so we were not able to start our programme and work on it. Then it got better during the day and we made the most of it. For myself it was a bit longer without driving - since Brazil - so I was happy to be back in and overall I think it was a very good day for the team and for me."

Having been out of an F1 car for a number of months, Pic admitted it took a little bit of time for him to get fully up to speed.

"To be honest it took me a few runs because there is a lot of change compared to last year. The power unit is different and the feeling you have on the pick-up and the throttle transition is different so you need some time to get used to it. But after a few runs it was fine."

Asked if there were any updates on the E22 at the Circuit de Catalunya, Pic clarified: "No, it was the same parts ... we didn't have any [problems], so it was a good day."
