Spain F1 in-season test: Vettel: A step in the right direction

Despite missing out on most of the morning session, Sebastian Vettel still turns in 74 laps in Spain to complete a productive day for Red Bull.
Sebastian Vettel says his charge to fourth place in the Spanish Grand Prix and a fairly productive day of F1 testing at the Circuit de Catalunya can be considered a 'step in the right direction' in Red Bull Racing's attempts to close the gap to Mercedes.

Though Vettel didn't emerge until relatively late in the morning as his team attempted to fix the gearbox issue that ended Sebastien Buemi's running on the first day, the defending champion would go on to complete 73 laps in the afternoon.

Nonetheless, despite the late start, Vettel insists the day was still 'very good' as he turned in the seventh fastest lap time working on set-up.

“We had a gearbox problem yesterday with Sebastien Buemi, so we spent all night and all morning fixing the problem. The afternoon was still very good for us because we could do a lot of laps considering the time we had, though it was not the perfect day.

“We used the tyres that we used last weekend, so it was more useful to try and understand the car in general, rather than prepare for a single race.”

Reflecting on his troubled, but ultimately rewarding, Spanish Grand Prix weekend, though Vettel was dogged by technical issues on the RB10 during practice and qualifying, he believes his run to fourth from 15th on the grid is a positive sign.

“Sunday was already a step in the right direction. Last weekend was a short weekend from my side, but it was definitely a much better feeling in the car than previous races.”

SV is RBR best asset as he is the best technically minded of the top drivers on the grid. When he was on his out lap to the starting grid for the race in Spain he reported a front wheel brake locking problem and he advised the team that it felt the exact same thing he suffered in Turkey in 2010 when an anti-roll bar broke, and presto it was discovered that when replacing the gearbox on his RB10 they forgot to fit the anti-roll bar back.
