Vergne: You have to be humble racing F1 in Monaco

Toro Rosso's Jean-Eric Vergne will not be relying on past performances to carry him through the Monaco F1 weekend.

Jean-Eric Vergne has confirmed the reverence with which F1 drivers approach the annual trip to Monaco, insisting that you cannot afford to be complacent ahead of tackling the sport's most famous street circuit.

While his 20-year old rookie team-mate faces Monaco for the first time this weekend, Vergne now has two F1 outings there to his name, improving from twelfth in his rookie season to claim points for eighth place last year. However, despite being happy with his performances in the Principality, the Frenchman insists that he will not be riding them into the 2014 event.

“I think it is one of the hardest races and you should always arrive there
in a humble state of mind and never expect anything just because things went
well the previous year,” Vergne explained, “I am not going there being overconfident…”

With Toro Rosso's results being somewhat mercurial this season – the team currently lies a distant seventh in the constructors' standings but ahead of Lotus and Sauber – Vergne will be hoping for a little luck in Monaco, but acknowledges that his team still needs to prepare thoroughly to take advantage of others' misfortune.

“I enjoy the weekend a lot, with everything that goes on, even if, as a driver, I live
in a bubble over the weekend,” he noted, “You have to work hard all weekend and not make any mistakes. [Monaco] requires far higher levels of concentration from the beginning to the end of the weekend – and we will certainly be busy in the cockpit this year, [even if] by now we are used to all the new jobs we have to do in the car.”

Vergne will be one of three French drivers in the field this season – as was the case in 2013 – and admits that Monaco is effectively the closest he gets to racing in his homeland.

“It's something of a home race for me, given there is no French Grand Prix on
the calendar for the moment,” he confirmed, “Actually, I can really tell myself that I'm at home, because I stay in Menton for this race, which is really across the 'border'...!”
