Toto Wolff has praised Nico Rosberg's mental strength after he regained the championship lead with victory in Monaco.

The win was Rosberg's first since the opening race of the season - when team-mate Lewis Hamilton retired having started on pole - and put an end to a run of four straight Hamilton wins. Victory in the Spanish Grand Prix had finally seen Hamilton move in to the lead in the drivers' championship, but Rosberg responded by taking it straight back in Monte Carlo.

Speaking exclusively to, when asked if Rosberg had shown impressive mental strength, Wolff replied: "Yes, absolutely.

"I remember two weeks ago people were writing him off and saying 'Will that break him?' Now here we are two weeks later and he's back in the lead of the championship, so you can never somebody off.

"These guys are really competitive. They have gone through these situations many times in their lives be it in karting or in junior formulae so that is OK."

With Red Bull's Daniel Ricciardo threatening to spoil the one-two result in Monaco, executive director (business) Wolff doesn't expect to have quite such a tough time in Canada next weekend.

"We know that Red Bull was going to be closer because [Monaco] is a downforce track and it is not a power circuit so hopefully we will increase the margin in Montreal again a little bit."
