Massa: Hamilton, Rosberg relationship doesn’t matter
29 May 2014
Felipe Massa says the relationship between Lewis Hamilton and Nico Rosberg doesn't matter because Mercedes is so dominant this season.
Rosberg's qualifying mistake – which Hamilton believed to be deliberate – in Monaco further strained the relationship between the two drivers as it emerged that both had defied the team to change engine settings during previous races. However, Massa said the two drivers don't have to work well together this year because Mercedes is not under threat from any other team.
“I think the relationship doesn't matter,” Massa said. “It's important to work well to have the team improving compared to the other teams but they don't need that! They have the best car from now until the end of the championship.
“If Nico did it on purpose, it's something which is a little bit against my mentality, but I think Lewis showed that maybe under the pressure he can make mistakes. Maybe Lewis was stronger than Nico on the track but doing that can work and it can put Lewis in a mentally difficult situation.”
And Massa admitted it was interesting to watch an inter-team battle for the championship, having been fighting with team-mate Kimi Raikkonen and McLaren back in 2008.
“It's interesting. When you are fighting for the championship just with your team-mate, maybe some tricks can work.
“It was different [between Massa and Raikkonen] because we were fighting with another team. It's completely different, we never did anything against one or the other. For sure, trying to sometimes not tell him some things that I did on the set-up, but nothing really like that…”
