F1 Canadian Grand Prix: Massa ‘sure’ he can do much better

Williams pilot Felipe Massa looking for better than seventh at Canada's Circuit Gilles Villeneuve
Felipe Massa is 'sure' he can do much better this weekend in Canada and top his seventh place finish from last time out in Monaco.

Massa took his third top-ten result - and third seventh place finish - of the 2014 F1 season two weeks ago at the Principality, but with team-mate Valtteri Bottas having scored in five of the six races – including taking two fifths – the Brazilian knows there is more to come.

“No,” he replied, when asked if he was happy with what Williams have done so far in 2014. “Definitely I think I didn't have great results until now. It should be much better than what I had until now.

“I've had some not very great races, starting with the [opening] race [in Australia], where I didn't get to corner two and you know in Bahrain I was fighting for third, fourth the whole race and then I lost a lot of positions because of the safety car.

“So I think it was not very great results but I'm sure we can do much better and I hope this track can be also a bit better for our car compared to Monaco, compared to [the] other tracks. So really looking forward [I hope] that we can have a lot better results, starting here in Montreal, a lot better than seventh.”

His comments echo those made in the build-up to the event in Montreal: “We aim to be more competitive and hopefully we can have a good performance [in Canada]. The top speed of the car is good and this will be our main strength,” he stated.

Meanwhile, Massa added that the arrival of Rob Smedley, his old race engineer at Ferrari and now Williams' head of vehicle performance, has been a plus for the Grove-based squad.

“He has lots of experience and has brought a good direction. [As well as] different things in terms of how to work, you know, in many different areas. I think he's a very intelligent engineer and has a lot of experience.

“For sure, though, things don't change from one day to the other, so it takes a little bit of time. But not just him, we have a lot of great engineers, a lot of good people and things are getting better all the time inside the team and I'm really looking forward that from now until the end of the of the championship things will get better and better all the time,” he concluded.
