Fernando Alonso has challenged Ferrari to "find perfection" in order to secure a strong result in the Canadian Grand Prix.

Ferrari has struggled on the whole so far this season, with just one podium to its name as it currently sits third in the constructors' championship. Alonso was fourth last time out in Monaco but he believes the circuit characteristics in Montreal will not suit Ferrari and the team will have to be at its best to challenge for major points.

"I think it's going to be a tough weekend," Alonso said. "Obviously the track is again dominated by the power effect, not like Barcelona or Monaco which were completely different characteristics. So I am sure that it's not going to be easy this weekend. But on the other side I like the track, we've performed quite well in the last four years here with the team, so I expect to have a good weekend anyway and have good points at the end of the race.

"We need to think also that there are some updates coming to the car that we have been working on for some weeks. We've been testing on the simulator quite a lot and also after Barcelona [testing], and after Monaco. Then all these hopes we need to see on the track.

"It's a circuit which we run in 1m15s or 1m16s so it's one of the shortest circuits. So we expect the times to be really close, within a second for 15 cars or whatever. So we need to find perfection because one or two tenths can be six or seven positions and we need to be in front of these seven cars."

With Alonso having scored Ferrari's only podium of the season so far in China, he admitted a repeat would be a tall order even I the updates work.

"I don't know really, the podium is a very ambitious target. Obviously we need to be optimistic because it's only Thursday so we need to believe in ourselves but let's go step-by-step. First we need to do a good practice, try to validate the new package, try to confirm the good hopes that we have and then a good qualifying.

"As I said it's important to maximise everything because there are many cars in a very narrow window of lap time. Then in the race we'll see. In the past it has been quite a good race for us with good pace in the race and we need to confirm this. If we can be on the podium it's fantastic, if not then we need to score as many points as possible."
