Hamilton keen to ‘keep head together’

20 June 2014

Lewis Hamilton says keeping his head together will be the greatest test for him in qualifying for the Austrian Grand Prix.

FP1 saw Nico Rosberg set the pace, but in the second session Hamilton hit back to comfortably head his team-mate. However, having shown the pace he is capable of, when asked what the biggest challenge will be on Saturday, Hamilton replied: "Just keeping my head together and doing the laps I know I can do."

Despite that, Hamilton also said he felt Rosberg would have “some time in his pocket" ahead of qualifying.

Rosberg currently holds a 22-point lead in the drivers' championship over his team-mate, but Hamilton says he prefers playing catch-up rather than being out in front.

"Hunting definitely brings out the better side, for sure. When you are in front you feel vulnerable, open, and any mistake you make you are going to be caught, so hopefully I can continue to apply pressure."

And Hamilton is confident he is in for a strong weekend in Austria having driven the circuit for the first time on Friday.

"[The feeling was] not bad considering I've never driven it before. In the first session with the laps we did I was already feeling pretty comfortable. With the more laps I do I'm always finding time, new lines. Considering others around me have driven this track before it was a pretty good feeling."
