'Hamilton unbeatable if head in right place' - Button

Jenson Button backs Lewis Hamilton in title race, not convinced by talk that the Briton is quicker, but that Nico Rosberg is more intelligent.
McLaren's Jenson Button reckons his former team-mate Lewis Hamilton could be unbeatable this season as he looks to claim his second F1 Drivers' title.

Hamilton re-took the initiative in the British Grand Prix last weekend, when he won and notched up his fifth victory of the year. Nico Rosberg, in contrast, suffered his first retirement of the 2014 season in the sister Mercedes and that allowed Hamilton to slash the German's lead at the top of the 2014 Formula 1 Drivers Championship from a comfortable 29 points to a slim 4.

“People say Lewis Hamilton is quicker but Nico Rosberg is more intelligent, but I don't know though,” Button said during an interview with talkSport's 'Weekend Sports Breakfast' programme on Saturday.

“I know how quick Lewis is and if his head is in the right place he will be unbeatable [in the title race].”

As for his own season, Button admitted it has been frustrating – just like in 2013 when McLaren also struggled. However, the 2009 F1 World Champion remains confident McLaren will get it right.

“It's been a very tough year to be fair, very tough. We are not where we are use to being at the front. McLaren is use to fighting up the front with the other top teams. But this year that hasn't been the case. But we are getting strong and the British Grand Prix showed that,” Button added. “We qualified third in tricky conditions and just, almost got a podium - but didn't quite. It was an amazing weekend and so much support from the fans. It was a very, very special race.”

“We've got the best engine, which is the Mercedes, so we don't have that excuse. We just haven't built a good enough car to win races this year,” he continued. “We're working hard however, and there have been a lot of improvements already this year – personnel changes and what have you and adding to the strong team that we already have.

"We will win races. It is just a matter of time. It is very frustrating [not being able to win] because when you have won races before and a championship, nothing else is good enough, but we're on the right track and that's the most important thing.”
