Lewis Hamilton was quickest in FP2 for the German Grand Prix but saw Daniel Ricciardo bring Red Bull close to Mercedes.

After Nico Rosberg edged out his team-mate in FP1, it was Hamilton who was on top in the afternoon with a 1:18.341 which left him just 0.024s clear of Rosberg. With the best times being set on the supersoft tyre, Ricciardo was third quickest on a 1:18.443 and was the only other driver within half a second of the leading pair.

Kimi Raikkonen was fourth for Ferrari but 0.546 slower than Hamilton, just ahead of Kevin Magnussen and Felipe Massa. Red Bull tested a new front wing throughout the session with both Ricciardo and Sebastian Vettel - eighth quickest behind Jenson Button - running flo-viz paint on their long runs in the final half hour.

Fernando Alonson and Valtteri Bottas rounded out the top ten as Red Bull, Williams, Ferrari and McLaren all looked closely matched on one-lap pace. It was also another encouraging performance for Adrian Sutil as he ended the session in 11th place and just a second slower than Hamilton.

After a hot first practice session, temperatures were even higher for FP2 with the air temperature constantly above 30C and track temperature peaking at 58C. While the soft tyre seemed to cope quite well in the conditions, the supersoft struggled on longer runs with a number of cars shredding chunks of rubber from their front tyres.

The temperatures also meant brakes were getting very hot and matters at Mercedes were not helped by a pit stop error. With both cars due in in quick succession, Mercedes put Rosberg's tyres on Hamilton's car and had to switch them round, leaving Rosberg waiting behind his team-mate with smoke pouring off the front brakes.

Caterham endured a tough session as both cars hit trouble early on. Marcus Ericsson managed just three laps before his Caterham coasted to a stop on the exit of Turn 1, while Kamui Kobayashi was then seen travelling slowly with flames emerging from the rear of the car. Kobayashi pulled off the track safely while the fire was extinguished. Fortunately for Ericsson at least, having parked his car at the pit lane exit the team was able to recover it and get him back out later in the session.

Drivers already seemed more comfortable without FRIC systems than in FP1, with noticeably less lock-ups and running wide seen under heavy braking than in the morning session.
