Hungarian F1 Grand Prix: Hamilton keen for Mercedes extension

Lewis Hamilton says he has told Mercedes he would like to open negotiations over a contract extension with the team
Lewis Hamilton says he has told Mercedes he would like to open negotiations over a contract extension with the team.

Nico Rosberg was confirmed as signing a new multi-year contract ahead of last week's German Grand Prix, with his original deal having been set to expire at the end of this season. Hamilton's contract runs until the end of 2015, but he says he is ready to begin talks over a deal beyond that point.

"I've shown an interest in sitting down and talking,” Hamilton said. “We haven't sat down yet, but the team know I'd like to push to continue, and they have made clear they would like to do the same.

"I've been with Mercedes since I was 13, so I very much feel I've Mercedes imprinted on my chest, so it's very much a family for me. But you never know what's going to happen in the future, but I can't particularly see myself anywhere else.

"But, for example, if they happen to want someone else then I'm not going to whinge about it. There are places for everyone."

With Hamilton and Rosberg having had a few flashpoints during the season so far, Hamilton believes they will still be able to enjoy a fair fight even if the constructors' championship is sealed early.

"I haven't thought about it, but possibly [the dynamic would change]. I've had that with Fernando [Alonso] and it was an interesting dynamic how that worked, so it would be interesting. But it's a different situation here. It's a lot calmer, and hopefully a lot more love shared equally here, so hopefully it will remain the same."

Looking ahead to this weekend's race in Hungary, Hamilton said beating Rosberg could be significant for his chances of winning the title.

"It's not any more important than any other race. I take every race as seriously as any other. This race is an opportunity to gain. I'm chasing, I've been on the back foot since race one, and I'm enjoying that battle. If I can close up the gap at all this weekend then that would be a huge positive going into the break, and into the second half of the season when it's time to attack."

Mark It sounds like Lewis needs Mercedes more than Mercedes needs Lewis. I wonder how much of a pay cut he is willing to take?
Mark did you forget that Lewis was recruited to sign with Merc? And that he has been a Merc driver since age 13.
