F1 Hungarian Grand Prix: Raikkonen: Saturday mistakes cost better result

Kimi Raikkonen says he is frustrated that mistakes made by Ferrari on Saturday cost him the chance of a better result in the Hungarian Grand Prix.

Having been happier with the handling of his car a strategic error from Ferrari in qualifying saw Raikkonen drop out in Q1 and start the race from 16th on the grid. Although he produced an impressive recovery drive to sixth place, Raikkonen said Saturday had prevented him from making the most of his pace this weekend.

“The car has been feeling pretty OK all weekend but where we started it was a hard race to get any better result,” Raikkonen said. “Obviously I'm still disappointed from yesterday. I think we still deserve a bit more but not after yesterday.

“Sixth doesn't really give me anything. I'm here to try to win races. OK it gives me some good points but it's still nowhere near where we should be.”

And Raikkonen conceded sixth was the best position he could manage on the tight and twisty Hungaroring circuit.

“After yesterday's mistakes, problems … This kind of place is hard to pass, we're lacking the straight line speed a bit and I had difficulty getting past Sauber at the beginning of the race even with the DRS. Obviously it was a bit tricky but we managed to gain places.

“We were faster than the Williams but I just couldn't get past and then obviously following it so closely for so many laps it just takes a lot out of the tyres. So in the end I just couldn't try. I was close a few times but it wasn't possible.”
