‘He still managed to crash in to Jules’

28 July 2014

Marussia sporting director Graeme Lowdon says Pastor Maldonado's collision with Jules Bianchi could have been “incredibly costly”.

During an incident-packed race, Maldonado ran in to Bianchi at Turn 1 when trying to overtake the Marussia, damaging both cars as a result. Bianchi was limited to 15th place but Marussia remains ninth in the constructors' championship as Sauber failed to score with Adrian Sutil less than a second away from the points.

However, speaking exclusively to Crash.net Lowdon said he was disappointed with the incident as Maldonado could have cost the team the chance to defend its position.

“I thought it was a shame for Jules, he'd created a good position for himself in the race,” Lowdon said. “Maldonado was obviously quicker at that stage, Jules gave him absolutely plenty of room – you could not have given a driver more room – and he still managed to crash in to Jules.

“I think that's a shame because Jules wasn't squeezing him or anything else like that. It's a shame because it ruins two races really and that kind of thing can be incredibly costly.

“So hopefully we won't have too much more of that kind of thing. Hopefully we'll have a clear run for the rest of the year. But I think we're seeing that anything can happen in Formula One; it's a pretty exciting show at the minute.”
