Lotterer set to replace Kobayashi at Caterham

19 August 2014

Andre Lotterer is set to replace Kamui Kobayashi at Caterham ahead of this weekend's Belgian Grand Prix.

The three-time Le Mans winner – who currently drives for Audi alongside Super Formula commitments in Japan – has links with Caterham adviser Colin Kolles having driven for Kolles' Audi LMP1 entry at Le Mans in 2009. Lotterer's only previous F1 experience comes in the form of being test driver for Jaguar in 2002.

Crash.net understands an announcement from Caterham about its driver line-up will be made later this week, with Kobayashi the man to be replaced due to the substantial sponsorship that Marcus Ericsson brings to the team.

Caterham's driver line-up has been the centre of speculation since Tony Fernandes sold Caterham to a group of Swiss and Middle Eastern investors advised by Kolles in June, with Christijan Albers taking over as team principal.

Kobayashi revealed to Crash.net during an exclusive interview that he had been warned he may not see out the season with Caterham, but believed he was the best option to try and help the team regain 10th place in the constructors' championship.
