F1: Wolff wants to better first half of 2014

Mercedes team boss Toto Wolff has called for an improvement over the remaining eight races of 2014, claiming F1 title battles are far from over.

Toto Wolff has set the Mercedes F1 team the goal of improving on its performance in the first half of the 2014 F1 season, in a bid to ensure a championship double.

While Nico Rosberg and Lewis Hamilton look set to fight it out for the drivers' title, the head of Mercedes-Benz Motorsport is well aware that cracks in the team's mechanical armour could easily derail its bid for both crowns, and has called for an improvement in reliability and step up in performance to keep both drivers to the fore.

“It has been good for the sport to take a break during these past two weeks after an intense start to the season,” he said, “Aside from the demanding schedule which we encounter each and every year, the challenges of this new formula have placed an extra demand on all the people who have worked so hard to produce what is an almost entirely new car for these revolutionary regulations. The big positive from that, however, is that what we have already seen an impressive display in terms of both the technology underneath the drivers and some spectacular racing on track.”

With both Hamilton, in particular, and Rosberg having suffered technical problems this season, keeping both cars on track is a prime concern for Wolff with eight races remaining.

“Looking ahead to Spa, and also reflecting on our recent performances, it is clear that reliability must be a key focus for the team if we are to maintain the hard-earned advantage established in the opening stages of the year,” he confirmed.

“We approach the remaining eight races with the firm target of making this next phase of the season even better than what we have achieved so far. Although the team has done a fantastic job, we are fully aware that this championship is far from decided - as demonstrated clearly in Hungary by the performance of some of our competitors. As always, we are taking nothing for granted.”

Toto is right in asking for/wanting an improvement in performance in the second half of the season, the main improvement in performance will have to come from an improvement in reliability, something that Lowe after being handed by far the best package on the grid has failed to improve upon, Lowe should concentrate on improving the car reliability instead of trying to take credit for the package he was handed.

He's a bit insufferable.
