F1: Chilton ‘volunteered’ to stand down at Marussia

Max Chilton apparently agreed to relinquish his F1 ride with Marussia at the Belgian Grand Prix in a bid to help the team financially.
Deposed Max Chilton insists that he took the decision to give his seat to Alexander Rossi at the Belgian Grand Prix for the good of the Marussia F1 team.

Rossi's promotion to a full race drive on the eve of this weekend's round was somewhat unexpected, with an official team statement confirming that his rapid rise from the role of recently-appointed reserve had come about as the result of Chilton running into 'contractual issues'

However, the Briton - who was widely rumoured to have relied on family money to secure his place alongside Jules Bianchi last season – insists that he was fully behind the decision to swap drivers.

“Max Chilton has volunteered to step out of his race seat for this weekend's race in Spa, Belgium, to allow the team to attract much needed funds by selling his seat,” a statement from the driver's PR company claimed.

“Max will attend the race and be on hand to support the team in any way possible. It is expected that Marussia will invite reserve driver Alexander Rossi to take Max's seat.

“Marussia are currently in talks with several new investors and it is expected that situation will be resolved before the next race in the F1 calendar in Monza.”

Despite an admirable finishing record, Chilton remains pointless after 30 races in the top flight, while Bianchi secured two valuable points for Marussia at this year's Monaco Grand Prix, elevating the minnow above both Sauber and Caterham in the battle for a top ten championship position.
