Alonso ‘ambitious’, targets Ricciardo
21 August 2014
Fernando Alonso says he has set himself the “ambitious” target of beating Daniel Ricciardo to third place in the drivers' championship this season.
Ricciardo's victory in the Hungarian Grand Prix was his second of the season, a result which moved him 16 points clear of Alonso in the race for best of the rest behind the two Mercedes drivers. Alonso says the objective for the remainder of the season is for Ferrari to try and beat Williams in the constructors', but admits he has his own private battle in mind too.
“Targets, obviously the priority is to help the team to try and try to win the fight for third place in the championship that we lost with Williams in Germany, recovered in Hungary and I think will be a close fight until the end,” Alonso said. “We have two races now that are a little bit in favour of Williams' characteristics – Spa and Monza – so we need to deliver good results in the next two weekends to score good points.
“In the drivers' championship I would like to finish third with the Ricciardo fight, but I know that this is quite an ambitious target so we will see what we can do.”
With team principal Marco Mattiacci wanting Ferrari to be more aggressive in its development, Alonso says there are more fundamental improvements that need to be made at the team.
“I think at the end of 2011 we had more or less the same message that we would take risks and we were quite aggressive with the design of the 2012 car with pull-rod at the front and different concepts of the rear exhaust.
“So I don't think that we were not aggressive enough, we just need to put some things together, we need to keep improving the car, the factory, the facilities and be a stronger team with new ideas and new people coming hopefully.”
