Daniel Ricciardo says Red Bull is happy with its qualifying positions having set its cars up for a dry Belgian Grand Prix.

While Mercedes once again locked out the front row, Red Bull will start third with Sebastian Vettel and fifth with Ricciardo. With Saturday's qualifying session taking place in wet conditions throughout, Ricciardo said the team had sacrificed some of its pace in qualifying by opting for a low-downforce set-up in anticipation of a dry race.

"Expecting more? Probably not," Ricciardo said. "You always hope for more but realistically we've set the car up for a dry race so even though we're typically quite strong in the wet we knew that with the set-up we've chosen to go with it would bring us back down to probably the level of some other guys around us.

"So I think top five was still a good result for us. Obviously maybe without a mistake it could have been a bit better but in these conditions it's inevitable that you're always going to make a mistake. That's what it is, you're fighting the limit with such low grip and such low downforce. I'm sure the other drivers' lap wasn't perfect as well, I'm sure they had some moments which scared them also."

Ricciardo himself lost time running wide at Blanchimont but doesn't believe it proved too costly in the final qualifying result.

"I have to have a look, I haven't seen the data yet, but it wasn't the quickest way round the corner! But to be honest when I went off I was just hoping to stay on in terms of staying on some part of the track. There was a big puddle after the astroturf and I was hoping that it wouldn't spit me left in to the wall, so I was just happy to get round to the start/finish line again. There was definitely a few tenths in it, whether it was one, two or three - I think it was definitely more than one tenth - but we'll have a look."

However, Ricciardo admitted he was surprised to be so far off the pace of Mercedes despite the car set-up.

"I am a bit surprised to be honest. The gap to Mercedes was pretty big. We thought we would be able to close it up a bit in the wet, but especially early on in the session when I was maybe 2:10 or 2:09 and they were 2:06; that was seriously quick straight away and that hurts a little bit! But it's alright."
