F1 Italian Grand Prix: Merhi facing balancing act in FP1 at Monza

Roberto Merhi says it will be a “hard situation” for him on Friday in opening practice for the Italian Grand Prix as he will need to show he is ready to race and also build up confidence with the Caterham CT05
Roberto Merhi says it will be a “hard situation” for him on Friday when he makes his Formula 1 debut in opening practice for the Italian Grand Prix.

The 23-year-old will run in FP1 only, before Kamui Kobayashi takes over the Caterham CT05 for the rest of the weekend.

However, with many expecting the Spaniard to get a race chance - possibly as soon as the next grand prix in Singapore, he will need to demonstrate he is ready for such an opportunity.

“Tomorrow is a hard situation because you need to prove that you are ready to race and you [also] need to try and build up your confidence in the car,” he told reporters, including Crash.net, on Thursday at Monza.

“But you only have one and a half hours [in FP1] and only two sets of new tyres – and you are using one straight away and the other one 30 minutes later. You cannot drive a long time and then put a new set on at the last minute – that would be better.

"But you still need to show consistent lap times and that you can make steps. It is also important to give good feedback to the team, so that they know how the car is behaving. I think this is a mandatory thing for the moment.”

Asked if this run will pave the way for him do a race, he replied: “I don't know yet. At the moment we have to do FP1 to see how it goes and how much I can learn from the car. Then we will see what is going on and what is the next target for us.”

“It is great to be here though,” he added. “All the days of my life so far I have been striving to one day drive a Formula 1 car. I was in Formula Renault, Formula 3 and then I did the DTM before going back to single-seaters in the World Series by Renault [this year]. It looks like it was the right choice. Now I am back here at Monza and tomorrow I am going to drive a Formula 1 car for the first time. I am quite excited. It is going to be a bit hard, I think, but let's see how it goes.”
