Daniel Ricciardo praised Red Bull for helping him recover from an engine issue and believes he has "momentum" heading in to the rest of the Italian Grand Prix weekend.

FP1 saw Ricciardo called in to the garage with an engine problem after just 12 laps and he was forced to sit out the rest of the session while the team worked on the car. Having been ready for FP2, Ricciardo said Red Bull caught up well and made some solid progress by the end of the afternoon.

"We recovered well in the latter part of the afternoon session," Ricciardo said. "This morning we just a few little issues with an engine issue there, but we got it back out there and didn't have to change anything in the end. P2 started off a bit slow but we found a bit of pace so we're in the top ten; obviously we want to be a bit further up but it looks a bit better than earlier today so we can build on that.

"It's just one of those things on a Friday but obviously better today than the rest of the weekend. This afternoon we gathered up a bit more momentum; it took us a little bit of time to get going but we got it in the end and I think we'll be there for tomorrow."

And Ricciardo said a top five grid slot would be important if he wants to chase a third consecutive victory.

"Today was ... we're a little bit off, but I think we can chip away at it tomorrow. I think the Mercs will be quick but if we can sneak in to the top five during qualifying then we will have a good crack at the race."
