F1 Italian Grand Prix: Hamilton deserved it - Rosberg

Championship leader Nico Rosberg says he is disappointed to have lost out on the win in the 2014 F1 Italian Grand Prix, but concedes he just made a mistake
Nico Rosberg has admitted it was a “pity” he didn't win the Italian Grand Prix, but added that team-mate Lewis Hamilton “drove a great race” and “deserved” to win.

Rosberg took the lead at the start in his Mercedes, after Hamilton had problems off the line in the sister car due to a software glitch.

The German then stayed out front until he came under pressure after the first – and only – stops, when he went straight on at the chicane on lap 29, repeating the same mistake he had made in the early stages.

That allowed Hamilton in front and after that Rosberg was never really a threat, eventually finishing 3.1 seconds back in P2.

The result means Rosberg's championship lead over Hamilton is reduced from 29 points to 22 with six races to go.

“It was a pity it didn't work out today. But Lewis drove a great race and he deserved it. So, it is okay,” said Rosberg on the podium, although he was drowned out again by boos.

Speaking later, the championship leader added: “Lewis was coming quick from behind [after my stop]. I needed to up my pace and as a result I made a mistake.

“That was very bad. It lost me the lead in the end, so, definitely very disappointing from that point of view.”

“But then at the end of the day, first of all, it is a great day for the team because after the recent difficulties it is the first one-two in a long time. It is back to where we need to be. That is awesome,” he continued.

“For me, I am disappointed right now. But I still got second place and still a lot of points.

“So it is not a complete disaster.”
