Lewis Hamilton finished Friday practice for the Russian Grand Prix with the fastest time as Nico Rosberg made an error in FP2.

With soft tyre runs in the second practice session seeing the quickest times set, Hamilton posted a 1:39.630 to comfortably head the field. Hamilton was the only man below the 1m40s mark, with Kevin Magnussen in P2 but over 0.8s adrift of the Mercedes.

Fernando Alonso was third fastest after being one of the last drivers to post a time on soft tyres, ending up just 0.010s shy of Magnussen. Rosberg was limited to fourth place as he ran wide at Turn 17 - with a tailwind making the penultimate corner tricky for many drivers - and ruined his lap.

Valtteri Bottas was fifth behind Rosberg and just ahead of Jenson Button as McLaren continued to look competitive. It was a welcome recovery for Bottas after an unusual tyre blanket issue limited him to just nine laps in FP1. Felipe Massa also had a more encouraging session as he set the seventh fastest time ahead of Daniil Kvyat, Sebastian Vettel and Jean-Eric Vergne.

The session had a disjointed ending as Daniel Ricciardo brought out the red flags in the final ten minutes when he stopped on track with smoke coming from the rear of his Red Bull. However, marshals were able to quickly recover the car and allow cars to get back out for the final three minutes.

The tailwind which ruined Rosberg's lap was also causing problems at Turn 13, with a number of drivers running wide including both Force Indias, while Vettel also opted to bail out of the corner early with the run-off area tightening on exit.

Just 21 cars took part in the session as Marussia runs one car this weekend out of respect for Jules Bianchi, with Max Chilton finishing ahead of Kamui Kobayashi's Caterham.

Norville2: Rosberg error? that headline says to me that Hamilton only got fastest time because of Rosberg error....what error? [\blockquote]

It says it clearly in the text. 'Rosberg was limited to fourth place as he ran wide at Turn 17 ..... and ruined his lap'.
