Daniil Kvyat says he and Scuderia Toro Rosso has a 'great chance' going into the Russian Grand Prix after qualifying a career-best fifth place for his home event in Sochi.

Roared on by the crowd, Kvyat was a strong contender throughout the knockout phases before saving his best for last to split the McLarens and place his STR at the head of the third row.

Coming just a week after he was confirmed as being promoted to the Red Bull team for 2015 and ahead of the inaugural F1 race to take place in Russia, Kvyat was thrilled to 'put it together' under pressure.

"It all came together for us," he said. "I knew it was the last lap and I had to put it all together because before that my lap times were so-so, but the lap was very clean and we ended only 0.7s off Mercedes so it was a very impressive result.

Though pleased with his strong performance in front of the fans, Kvyat maintains his main focus remains the race, where he will look to better his previous best F1 result of ninth place.

"I am happy because I did in front of my home crowd but I didn't think about it too much when I was driving. I am starting from a high place which is a nice feeling, but the main focus is the race.

"We are starting from a good place, but we are always looking to go forward and it seems on this track there are good possibility for us. This is a great chance."
