F1 Russian Grand Prix: We did best we could, says Bottas

Williams driver Valtteri Bottas gets another podium in Russia and moves from sixth to fourth in the 2014 F1 Drivers' Championship ahead of Sebastian Vettel and Fernando Alonso
Valtteri Bottas took his fifth podium of the season in the inaugural Russian Grand Prix and feels Williams “did the best we could”.

Bottas kept eventual winner Lewis Hamilton honest in the early stages, but then dropped back towards the end of his first stint. He was then passed by the recovering Nico Rosberg around halfway through and eventually finished 3.8 seconds back, posting the fastest lap of the race on the final tour.

“I need to be happy for us as a team. What we have been doing since last year is amazing – again on the podium and a good amount of points,” Bottas said immediately after the chequered flag. “Today we were best of the rest. Unfortunately Mercedes are still quite a bit ahead. But we did the best we could from where we started.

“We need to be happy as a team,” he underlined.

The result moves Bottas from sixth to fourth in the Drivers' Championship, ahead of both Sebastian Vettel and Fernando Alonso – although it is tight, with just four points between them.

Speaking later on, Bottas explained that he struggled after his stop and couldn't get the medium tyres into the zone.

“At the beginning [of the race] the pace seemed to be really good and I was not far off from Lewis. Everything was going to plan and the tyres were feeling good,” he explained. “But suddenly the rear tyres started to go and I started to lose pace. We were struggling more and more and Lewis was getting far away.”

“Then we stopped for the prime and it took a long time to get the prime tyre to work,” he continued. “It was getting better towards the end and I had my best lap in the last lap of the race. It was really weird and as it took so long to get the tyres to work Nico got me in Turn 1 [on lap 30]. It was a bit of a surprise for me. I didn't expect him to come inside but luckily I saw him in time and there was no contact.

“But I think as a team again we did a good job. We have come so much forward from last season. It is again, really, really good to be on the podium.”

Bottas is now looking forward to going back to the USA in three weeks time: “I scored my first points in Formula 1 in Austin last year. It would be nice to have a good weekend there [again]. I think the track should be okay for us.

“Let's aim for that...”
