Though Lotus has signalled its desire to retain Romain Grosjean for the 2015 Formula 1 season, the man himself suggests he isn't ruling out an alternative just yet.

In a season that has seen Grosjean crack the top ten on just two occasions, the Frenchman says he has a contract to stay with Lotus in 2015 but also has the option to leave.

With this in mind and having previously indicated at a desire to progress to a 'top team' in the near future, though Grosjean isn't believed to be a front runner for the three available seats at Ferrari and McLaren, he says he is keeping his options open for the time being.

"I have a contract with the team [Lotus]," he said. "I have the option to leave if I want to but there are three places not confirmed in top teams and that is where I want to be in the near future and that is what we will try to do."

Despite this, Grosjean does acknowledge that Lotus have made good steps towards returning to competitiveness in 2015, starting with the move to Mercedes engines and a plan to test a new nose cone during the weekend's United States Grand Prix practice sessions.

"Lotus will be much better next year than they are this year, for a lot of reasons. The fact the team is bringing a new nose here to try and prepare for 2015 is a strong sign."
