Nico Rosberg says he knows where he can make up 0.003secs on Lewis Hamilton as he looks to get the edge on his team-mate and F1 title rival in qualifying for the United States Grand Prix.

The German finished second to Hamilton in both practice sessions around the Circuit of the Americas, but ended the day three thousandths of a second behind the British driver as Mercedes once again exerted its dominance over it rivals.

Indeed, Rosberg - who comes into the weekend 17 points adrift of Hamilton in the overall standings - is feeling positive about his chances in qualifying and the races.

VegasRyder: Must feel like he really has to prove himself. There is no benefit in this statement. If he beats him then great for him but if he doesn't then he has to deal with the fact that he made a prediction and failed to live up to it. IMO its best to just keep these feelings to one self and let the driving do the talking.[\blockquote]

We also have to remember that Hamilton was in the garage for a big chunk of time at the end of FP1. That .003sec gap may well have been larger if not for that gearbox problem...
