F1 Brazilian Grand Prix: F1: Massa aiming for 'best race' of year

Williams driver Felipe Massa delighted with top-three grid slot for home 2014 F1 Brazilian Grand Prix
Felipe Massa says he will be aiming for his best race of the season after qualifying third for his home Brazilian Grand Prix.

Massa will start alongside Williams team-mate Valtteri Bottas on the grid and he conceded it was extremely close between them, with just 0.058 seconds separating them.

“It's very emotional to be here in Brazil in a competitive car and sat in the top three,” Massa said. “I think it was definitely a good qualifying today and very tight between us in my team, me and Valtteri, and Nico [Rosberg] and Lewis [Hamilton] as well.

“We were very close so it was not an easy qualifying, but I managed to do a good lap straight away but then I just had a problem on the second set with traffic and the engine not firing up.

“The car is good and I would say it is competitive. We need to understand how the tyres will behave in the race tomorrow and the weather as well. But I think I can try to aim for my best race and I really hope that it can be positive and I can have some opportunities even with these two guys [Mercedes].

“We'll try.”

“I'm just so happy [with third] and I hope I get a good start tomorrow and a good result for us as well,” he added.

The result matched what he achieved in Germany, but he felt there was definitely a bit more there given he was slower on his second run.

“I didn't use everything I could from the car because there was a lot of traffic, a lot of problems on my last set [of tyres],” he explained. “We couldn't leave the engine on so there were a lot of problems to leave the garage [after the first run], so at the last moment we had a lot of traffic around with [Kevin] Magnussen.

“I couldn't improve my lap time and everybody was improving a little with the second set.”

So could he have beaten the Mercedes', especially given how quick the Williams is in the final sector?

“I think we were very fast in the last sector and even the first sector, we are just losing time in the second sector which is where you need more downforce,” Massa stated.

“It is really clear that we are missing a little bit throughout the championship, but it is also true that we have a good and competitive car.”

“I don't know if we will have the chance to be more competitive than Mercedes tomorrow now,” he added, “but I hope I will have the chance to be in front and at least compete with these guys. I will do everything I can and we know that this race is very important for us and for me and the people watching and supporting me.

“I will try everything again.”
