Team principal Marco Mattiacci says Fernando Alonso "will always occupy a special place" in the list of Ferrari drivers after his departure is confirmed.

Alonso will leave Ferrari at the end of the season following five years at Maranello, with McLaren his most likely destination. Having joined in 2010, Alonso says he reached his "very best level professionally" and Mattiacci praised "a great driver" ahead of his final race for the team.

"In the Scuderia Ferrari roll of honour of great drivers, Fernando Alonso will always occupy a special place," Mattiacci said. "We offer him our heartfelt thanks for what has been an extraordinary adventure with the Scuderia, when in the past five years, he twice came so close to winning the world championship.
