Carlos Sainz Jr said his test for Red Bull was "an incredible day" and hopes it showed he is worthy of a Toro Rosso drive.

Sainz Jr drove for Red Bull on Tuesday in Abu Dhabi as reward for his Formula Renault 3.5 championship victory, setting the fifth fastest time on his first run in the RB10. Speaking immediately after climbing out of the car, Sainz Jr said he had been able to push from an early stage and was pleased with his performance.

"For me it was an incredible day, a day that I've been thinking about from the start of the Formula Renault 3.5 season knowing that this was the prize," Sainz Jr said. "So it was always in my mind and finally to make it true and make it happen was an incredible feeling. In such an atmosphere with such a team on such a track is great.

"It felt really good to be honest. Obviously I had a reference from last year with RB9 and I could build up little by little as it was a long day. I think I did close to 100 laps and it was really nice to be honest. From the first lap I felt comfortable, felt at home and managed to push."

With Toro Rosso looking set to choose between Sainz Jr and Jean-Eric Vergne at Toro Rosso next season, Sainz Jr said the test afforded him the chance to display how much he has improved since his last test for Red Bull in 2013.

"To be honest I'm not hearing much. I'm just waiting for them to take a decision, I'm sure they will take the correct one and obviously I would like it to be me. You never know what can happen and I have to wait. I think this test was an important test for me to let them know the step forward I've done compared to last year, for them to know me a bit better and hopefully they can choose me."
