BRDC Formula 4 champion George Russell will test for McLaren after winning the McLaren Autosport BRDC Award (MABA).

Russell won five races in 2014 on his way to the F4 championship in his first season of single seater racing, while a wildcard appearance at Jerez in the Formula Renault Eurocup yielded a dominant pole position, fastest lap and victory. There were six finalists for the award, with all six having to attend two days of testing which included on-track tests in a McLaren 650S GT3, DTM-specification Mercedes, and a Formula Two car, as well as interviews with a panel of experts.

With the prize for the winner being ?100,000 to further his racing career and a test in a McLaren F1 car, Russell said he was overwhelmed with the result.

BRDC President Derek Warwick said he believes the award is recognition of Russell's talent after such an impressive debut season.

"Every year it has been tough as these drivers are better prepared and more professional," Warwick said. "This guy was quite extraordinary right from the first day. He's going to be a great champion and somebody we'll all be watching."
