Lewis Hamilton has been named BBC Sports Personality of the Year after a vote by the British public on Sunday night.

The award comes following Hamilton's second world championship victory, which was sealed with his 11th win of the season in Abu Dhabi three weeks ago. Hamilton beat golfer Rory McIlroy and athlete Jo Pavey to the award, and said he was "speechless" having previously been runner-up in both 2007 and 2008.

"I am so speechless," Hamilton said. "Firstly I really want to say a huge congratulations to all the champions, and I'm so proud and honoured to be amongst such great British sporting talent.

Makes me laugh when people conveniently forget Kimi only won the 2007 championship because Felipe moved over for him.... Six wins or no six wins.....[\blockquote]

correction! kimi won the championship because lulu played silly ****** during the year, messing with alonso and costing ferdi the wdc!
[\blockquote]

And the extra two points Kimi got given were also enough to keep Fernando from winning it too?????????

Alex4F1: Taipan you'd have also thought fanboys would be delighted about Vettel's struggles this season when he has every right to have an off key season and I think Ricciardo's season is a little over hyped anyway[\blockquote]

If they're not happy this year Alex the future looks bleak, I can't imagine another year where everything falls into Lulu's lap quite so easily. 2007 was a very fortunate championship but this was was almost impossible to lose given the circumstances.

You can't even get the the year right Taipants, he won it in 2008

Makes me laugh when people conveniently forget Kimi only won the 2007 championship because Felipe moved over for him.... Six wins or no six wins.....

And still the usual suspects can't give him any credit.......

richard: apparently there is some problem with the "vote". there are reports that there is a lot of dissatisfaction with the result. not saying that mcilroy would be better placed, but there was an inordinate number of repetitive votes for lulu.

and i am being serious here. it was reported on the radio this morning!

but i guess that they are checking the civil service computer records. ehh, rgt?[\blockquote]

Same happened in 2009 with Man U fans repeat texting.
