Jenson Button entered his 15th season in F1 hopeful of a big improvement at McLaren, but ended it with his future in the balance until the middle of December.

Third place in Australia - behind team-mate Kevin Magnussen - was Button's first podium since he won in Brazil in 2012, but he didn't get to taste the champagne as Daniel Ricciardo finished second at the time before later being excluded. Still, it was as good as it got for Button in another tough season for McLaren.

There were a number of highlights, with third on the grid at Silverstone being followed by a strong race in which Ricciardo again just prevented him from making the podium, but pressure was growing on Button throughout the year as Magnussen was a match for him in qualifying and rumours of a return for Fernando Alonso gathered pace.

With Alonso all but confirmed, it seemed Button's F1 career could be over but he was able to maximise the car's potential late in the season, finishing a strong fifth in the wet in Japan before fourth places in Russia and Brazil. Another fifth followed in Abu Dhabi - a result that kept Force India at bay for fifth in the constructors' championship - and Button eventually finished the year with more than double Magnussen's points tally.

As a result, McLaren opted to retain Button for another two years, and alongside Alonso he will have a big opportunity to raise his stock once again after two years with an uncompetitive car and inexperienced team-mates.
