Vergne joins Ferrari ahead of F1 2015

Ferrari has confirmed it has appointed Jean-Eric Vergne as one of its test drivers, while Pedro de la Rosa has been dropped
Toro Rosso reject Jean-Eric Vergne has been thrown an F1 lifeline by Ferrari, after the Scuderia confirmed he has been appointed as one of its test drivers.

Vergne will work on car development in the simulator, the Maranello team added, while Pedro de la Rosa has been dropped.

Vergne's appointment comes after Esteban Gutierrez was announced as the team's test and third driver earlier this week. Marc Gene and Davide Rigon both remain on Ferrari's books as testers.

“I feel very honoured to be joining the Ferrari family and becoming a part of the most prestigious team in the history of F1,” said Vergne. “The objective is a unanimous one and that is to help the Scuderia get back to the top step of the podium.

“Having had two years working in the simulator for a top F1 team and three years racing with Toro Rosso, my experience will add to the great efforts that are currently being made in order to get the team back to its winning ways.

“I look forward to fulfilling my dream in becoming a member of Scuderia Ferrari and having the Tifosi behind me every step of the way.”

“On behalf of the entire team, I welcome Jean-Eric, who I'm sure will make an important contribution to our development work in the simulator,” added new team principal Maurizio Arrivabene. “He will fit in to a programme aimed at improving important areas, invigorating and strengthening an already strong and capable group of professionals.”

Kimi Raikkonen and Sebastian Vettel will race for Ferrari next season.

Excellent choice! I am a big Kimi fan but have to admit last year was brutal. And Seb laid an egg as well. Ferrari now have a great reserve driver in JEV who will put pressure on both Kimi and Seb to perform, knowing he can step in and race competitively immediately.
