F1: Having Alonso as my team-mate means a lot – Button

Jenson Button reckons it will be a “big challenge” having Fernando Alonso as his team-mate in F1 2015, but it is one he is really looking forward to
Jenson Button says it will “mean a lot” to him to have Fernando Alonso as his team-mate next season.

McLaren confirmed its driver line-up for 2015 last week and while Button conceded it will be a “big challenge” to go up against the Spaniard, he insists it is “something he is very much looking forward to.”

“To be racing alongside Fernando really does mean a lot,” Button said. “I think we all know what he has achieved in F1, not just his speed but how he works within a team, and how he is always there fighting.

“For me to have a team-mate like that really does mean a lot. We have known each other since 2001, we were actually team-mates at another team [Renault] - I was racing and he was test driver, and then he took my seat for next year [2003]. So we know each other pretty well.

“With 500 Grands Prix between us, I think we are pretty experienced, and I think we will play a major role helping McLaren Honda achieve great things in the future.”

“To race alongside Fernando is going to be a big challenge, but an exciting challenge. I am very much looking forward to it,” he underlined.

I really would not put any money on who will come out with the better results at the end of the year. Both drivers have the uncanny knack of getting an under-performing car across the finish line consistently higher in the pecking order than expected.
