Fernando Alonso's final year with Ferrari turned out to be his most disappointing yet as the fairytale third drivers' championship continued to elude him.

An uncompetitive car from the start of the year, Alonso was impressive in starting with consecutive fourth places before coming home third in China, but already he and Ferrari knew there was little hope of even winning a race - let alone the title - without a Mercedes power unit, highlighted by ninth place in Bahrain.

The Alonso of past years would still have got every ounce of performance out of the car and then a little bit more, and Bahrain aside he didn't finish lower than sixth in the opening 11 rounds, culminating in second place in Hungary as Daniel Ricciardo snatched victory from him late on. However, rumours were gathering pace that Alonso had lost patience and would leave Ferrari at the end of the year.

After a disappointing retirement in front of the Tifosi at Monza, Alonso was a strong fourth in Singapore before the news became common knowledge in Japan. Sebastian Vettel's departure from Red Bull was announced, with Christian Horner confirming Ferrari as his destination. From that point on, Alonso scored just 28 points in total and the manner in which Vettel passed him on track in Abu Dhabi displayed that Alonso's desire for the Ferrari fight had disappeared as their partnership ended with a whimper.
