A year that promised so much ultimately ended in cruel fashion for Nico Rosberg as a maiden drivers' championship slipped away from him. However, just five victories and a number of controversial incidents limit Rosberg to fourth in our poll.

The season started in perfect fashion as Rosberg won comfortably in Australia while team-mate Lewis Hamilton retired, and a string of second places - including in the thrilling Bahrain Grand Prix - meant he held that lead until Hamilton's victory in Barcelona. Rosberg struck straight back in Monaco, but a controversial mistake in qualifying started to spice up the battle between the team-mates.

An impressive drive to second in an ailing car in Canada was followed by another win in Austria, but misfortunate finally struck at Silverstone as Rosberg retired from the lead and Hamilton won. A home victory at Hockenheim was a highlight, but Rosberg then finished fourth in Hungary having started on pole, even failing to beat Hamilton who had started from the pit lane.

Then came the defining moment of the season at Spa. Rosberg hit Hamilton at Les Combes, giving his team-mate a puncture that would eventually see him retire. While Rosberg finished second and opened up a substantial championship lead, the fallout was severe and seemed to rock his confidence as Hamilton hit back with five successive wins.

A crucial win in Brazil left the gap at 18 points heading to Abu Dhabi, but knowing he needed Hamilton to hit reliability issues it was Rosberg's Mercedes which failed as he limped home outside of the points while his team-mate took an 11th victory and the title. Played his part in an enthralling championship battle, but can have no complaints over the final outcome.
