Nico Rosberg has said he must get himself back to his best before he can challenge for the F1 drivers' title.

The Mercedes driver was beaten to last season's championship crown by his team-mate Lewis Hamilton after he held a controlling lead in the title race.

The British driver reigned in Rosberg's title points advantage after the German made key mistakes at the Italian and Russian Grand Prix, and his championship battle ended when he was struck by reliability issues at the season finale in Abu Dhabi.

The 29-year-old has said he needs to get himself driving at the top level again before he can set his sights on another title fight.

"The biggest challenge first of all is to be my best," Rosberg told Sky Sports. "That is the first and most important challenge for me - and to be better than ever."

The Mercedes team plan to unveil their new F1 car on the morning of the opening day of the first official test in Jerez and are fancied to be strong favourites for the upcoming season.

However, Rosberg remained hesitant and is waiting to see the performance of the other teams before making any predictions.

"The second challenge is going to be first of all trying to beat Lewis and then further more trying to beat all the other teams," he added. "We have no idea where we stand so we need to wait and see where we are. Of course we had very strong base last year so the chances are good, but we don't know."
