Daniel Ricciardo has identified McLaren as the team with the biggest potential to pull off a surprise in Formula 1 this season in the wake of its collaboration with returning engine supplier Honda.

The Red Bull Racing driver believes McLaren's decision to enter into a new partnership with the Japanese firm a year on from a change in the regulations could give the team an edge over Renault and Ferrari in its efforts to challenge Mercedes.

Indeed, though the Honda power unit suffered an inauspicious first run in Abu Dhabi last year, Ricciardo is 'excited' to see how McLaren will fare in 2015.

"The big question mark is McLaren with Honda," he said. "I'm actually very excited to see how they go and obviously they have the potential to do very well. They'll be the one everyone will be watching and what they will bring to the table. It'll be interesting."

Discussing the relative limitations available to existing engine suppliers Renault and Ferrari, despite the decision to grant them upgrade 'tokens' ahead of the 2015 season, Ricciardo feels McLaren has put itself into a position to cause an upset in 2015 with its all-new unit.

"It's more of a curiosity," he continued. "Ferrari have got the opportunity to make a big step forward but there a no signs they will be making a second up. But, if everything gels for McLaren with Honda they could make up that second.

"No-one knows how quick the Honda could be. It'll be exciting to see if they are really quick or further back in the pack. They've got the best opportunity with something completely new, good people in the team and pretty good financial backing. They've got the cards to do it, it depends what they can pull off."
