Jerez F1 Test: Hamilton lauds ‘special’ reliability as Mercedes goes distance
Lewis Hamilton put another 100+ laps on the new Mercedes W06 Hybrid as their title defence got off to a strong start at Jerez.
Lewis Hamilton has revealed that the entire Mercedes team has been impressed with the instant reliability of its new W06 Hybrid after racking up another 100-lap day at the Jerez test.
The Briton completed a session-high 115 laps on his way to third spot on the Wednesday timesheets and, having already revealed that Mercedes is not chasing times in southern Spain, paid tribute to the early potential of the car.
With Nico Rosberg twice topping 150 laps, on days one and three, and Hamilton's final day tally adding to the 91 he completed on Monday, the W06 clocked up 515 in total, the 2280 kilometres travels being the equivalent of nearly eight full grands prix.
“We generally got decent mileage – you always want more, but reliability has been pretty special this week,” the reigning world champion commented, “Paddy [Lowe] said it has been one of our highest weeks of miles so I think, for sure, it has been a surprise for us all to see.
“Nico had days of 150 laps each and, for us to have around 100 laps on both days, it is just great to see the work and the enthusiasm of all the guys in the garage. All the things we had to work on went to plan.”
Hamilton's day was interrupted by an early spin, which he put down to being the first out on slicks while sections of the lap were still damp, but the Briton barely encountered another problem. While some of Mercedes' rivals continue to struggle for mileage, Hamilton knows that the W06 is only going to get better.
“It never feels good the first time, because the car is at its worst and the tyres are not good in the cold conditions here in Jerez,” he explained, “Even when we were in Valencia all those years ago, or Bahrain, it never feels good the first time. It's just how it is, but at least you know that's the worst it's going to be for the whole year.
“The first week is always rushed, it's always a rush to get the car out, make sure it's all put together and you don't have all the things you want to test but I'm sure, [in Barcelona], we'll start working on set-up.”
