Jerez F1 Test: Verstappen content with first test
Max Verstappen completed another largely trouble-free day to end a successful first F1 test for both Toro Rosso rookies at Jerez.
Max Verstappen was a man of few words after the completion of his second day behind the wheel of the new Toro Rosso F1 contender, but what he said was largely positive.
The Dutchman, who will be the youngest driver in the field when racing kicks off in Melbourne next month, returned to the cockpit of the STR10 for the final day of four at the Jerez de la Frontera circuit, ending up fourth fastest after 97 laps.
The tally brought Verstappen's haul up to 171 laps – or 756km – for his two days in the car as he bedded himself into life as an F1 driver.
“We did a lot with the car and, for me, to get used to the new car was very important and I think we made big [steps] forward,” he reported, “We could do a lot of laps and the Renault engine, at the moment, is performing well, so we can't complain. I think we've had a great four days.”
Unable to make a proper judgement on the latest Pirelli tyres as 'this track is quite cold at the moment so the rear tyres can only overheat as quickly [as they do] at other tracks I've run before', Verstappen maintained that he and the team were 'moving in the right direction' as they retire to analyse the data collected and start planning for the second pre-season test, in Barcelona, later this month.
“You have to try and improve yourself and where you have to focus on at the moment, do more laps and, at the end, also with the car, we still many more stops to go,” Verstappen concluded.
“We have had four profitable days testing, during which both our drivers managed to complete a high mileage,” team principal Franz Tost added, referring to Verstappen's rookie team-mate Carlos Sainz Jr, “That meant we were able to learn a lot about our car.
“Generally, it ran reliably, with the only issues we encountered being small ones and we are confident we can iron them out before the next test in Barcelona. The whole team worked very hard and I thank them all for the great effort and the team spirit.
“The two drivers also did a very good job, producing a strong performance, building up speed over the entire test. If the team and drivers can keep this momentum going in the remaining two tests, then we will be very well prepared by the time we get to the first race of the season in Melbourne.”
