Nico Hulkenberg says he is encouraged by the first impressions of the Force India VJM08 after giving it its belated first run on the second day of the final F1 test.

Following numerous delays, the Mercedes-powered VJM08 emerged from the pit lane for the first time just before lunch and, save for a puncture on its first lap, went on to enjoy an unexpectedly trouble-free run to the chequered flag.

Completing a full 77 laps without issue, though Hulkenberg says it wasn't the time to push the car at this early stage, the German was delighted with its instant reliability out of the box, even if concedes there is plenty of work ahead of the team with just two days of testing to go.

"Just from a pure running point of view, it was very good," he said. "Out of the box there was no issue, not one. We managed 77 laps pretty much only in an afternoon, which is pretty remarkable.

"We are playing catch up at the moment and making checks that teams have done weeks ago, but it was a positive day. We now need to try and learn about this car quickly.

Regarding the car itself, Hulkenberg says the early signs are good, adding that it reminds him of last year's VJM07 in certain areas

"Some areas remind me of last year's car, it doesn't feel like a totally different car. Some areas are better, I can tell already, some areas we need to work on, but that isn't unusual."

Hulkenberg will get a second consecutive day in the car tomorrow, before Sergio Perez gets just a single day in the car before it is shipped to Melbourne for the Australian Grand Prix with little more than two days of mileage.
