Lewis Hamilton is turning his attentions to the opening round of his Formula 1 World Championship title defence after concluding his pre-season at the Circuit de Catalunya with the fastest time.

Despite a day interrupted by a lengthy stay in the pit-lane to pore over set-up changes - as raised by Nico Rosberg yesterday and confirmed by Hamilton today -, last year's champion moved fastest in the final hour with a 1min 23.022secs lap on soft tyres.

Two tenths faster than Felipe Massa's effort on the super-soft tyre, Hamilton's performance seemed to confirm the assertion that Mercedes will certainly be the team to beat when the season gets underway at Albert Park.

Indeed, though Hamilton lamented that the track was slower than on Thursday, he was pleased with his eventual quick effort.

"I put the lap together but the track today was quite slow," he said. "I don't think Nico was comfortable with the car yesterday and I wanted to see if I felt the same today, and I did.

"We think it is the tyres and the circuit are behaving a little bit differently these past two days and I would say the track is between one second and seven tenths slower than the first day.

Though he finishes the pre-season test at least four tenths adrift of Rosberg's best time on the same tyres, Hamilton says he feels good in the car.

"I'm still glad we got some running done and I feel good in the car. We were trying to understand a few things today with the set up and it gave us a clearer indication of that in the afternoon. The guys in the team have been exceptional during these tests and I just can't wait to get racing now - the fun stuff!"
