Fernando Alonso says he is 'enjoying every single session' as the McLaren-Honda showed a notable step forward in form during practice for the Chinese Grand Prix.

With team-mate Jenson Button cracking the top ten in FP2, 12th place Fernando Alonso says he is encouraged by the evident improvements made by the MP4-30 between events as McLaren forges closer to the mid-field.

However, though Alonso - who failed to finish in Malaysia - is impressed with the pace, he is cautious about making predictions for the remainder of the weekend as rivals up the pace.

"I doubt [we can continue in the same vein]. We need to keep our feet on the ground and understand that, tomorrow, in qualifying, the others put some extra power as we saw in Australia and Malaysia.

"I don't think that Q3 is possible but Q2 is definitely the goal for tomorrow and finishing the race, maybe even close to the points, is also a goal. It was a very positive day and I'm very happy."

Despite this, Alonso is enjoying being part of the progress the team is making with each session.

"I am enjoying every single session because, obviously, we started very low so it is a little bit easier to improve fast. The team is so focused, so determined, to improve.

"Even if, here, we didn't bolt too many updates to the car, just a few, all of them are working as expected and they put us another step forward and closer to the mid-pack cars so this is a very encouraging moment and we are definitely moving firmly in the right direction. It's just a question of time until we are competitive.
