Daniel Ricciardo has been honoured at the annual Laureus World Sport Awards after winning the Breakthrough of the Year accolade.

The Australian was nominated for the award as a recognition for his three race wins during the 2014 F1 season - his first year with the Red Bull Racing team - en route to third position in the overall standings, behind only the dominant Mercedes' and former Laureus Sportsman of the Year team-mate Sebastian Vettel.

Announced at a ceremony in Shanghai, China, Ricciardo beat tennis player Marin Cilic, footballers Mario Gotze and James Rodriguez, skier Mikaela Shiffrin and the Swss Davis Cup tennis team.

As well as Ricciardo, Lewis Hamilton was up for Sportsman of the Year but - having already revealed he hadn't won during the Chinese Grand Prix - lost out to Novak Djokovic, while Mercedes was beaten by the German World Cup Football squad for the Team of the Year accolade.
