Barcelona F1 test: Gutierrez: New Ferrari package is better
Ferrari development driver Esteban Gutierrez believes that, after a little fine-tuning, Ferrari's latest aerodynamic package is an advance over its predecessor.
Sebastian Vettel and Kimi Raikkonen may not have agreed after being soundly beaten in Sunday's Spanish Grand Prix, but Ferrari development driver Esteban Gutierrez insists that the Scuderia's latest aero package is a step forward.
Vettel completed the podium in Barcelona, with Raikkonen fifth behind countryman Valtteri Bottas, but the general mood in the Ferrari camp was that the team had lost ground to Mercedes rather than making inroads into its advantage. Gutierrez, however, had a more positive spin as, having taken over from Prancing Horse protégé Raffaele Marciello for day two of the in-season test, he clocked up 117 laps of aero testing.
“We were working on a very wide range of things,” the Mexican reported, “Many things related to the driveability and many different tests - as you could see from a lot of runs and a lot of laps in the runs.
“It was positive because we can say we were very productive in this test and we can be happy about it. We went through the programme. Unfortunately, we lost a bit of time in some run outings with the red flag, but it was not a lot and, in the end, we were able to recover and do proper things.”
Asked what he would be telling Vettel and Raikkonen, Gutierrez insisted that 'the new package is better'.
“You could see it from the race, where Sebastian was in a better shape overall,” he pointed out, “Today, we have improved that. There was a bit of difficulty on a way to set-up the car for the package and this was one of things that was interesting to improve for this test.”
Having been picked up by Ferrari at the end of his time with Sauber, Gutierrez has spent most of his time working in the Scuderia's simulator, and thus enjoyed being able to get out on a 'real' track.
“It is quite impressive actually,” he said of the F15-T, “It is the first time I have driven this year's car and the feeling straight away was very positive - and different to what I am used to. I am really grateful because everyone was really looking forward to me testing the car.
“I have been a lot in Maranello and the simulator, so it is interesting to correlate that and keep up the work and development. It is hard to put it in numbers, but I think, as soon as you have a good reference and a good idea of what it can be in terms of balance, the simulator is a good tool. We are at a stage where we need to fine-tune things which come more from the background and this is what we are trying to develop.”
