Wehrlein remains focused on DTM
Despite a pace-setting outing with world champion Mercedes in this week's Barcelona F1 group test, Pascal Wehrlein is not letting his dreams cloud reality.
Mercedes protégé Pascal Wehrlein insists that he needs to produce the right sort of results in DTM before he can start thinking about a move to F1.
The German youngster, who was due to drive for both the works Mercedes and customer Force India teams during this past week's Barcelona group test, has been listed amongst potential long-term replacements for Nico Hamilton and Lewis Hamilton, but he maintains that F1 remains a long-term dream.
As it turned out, a fever prevented Wehrlein from taking up the opportunity to drive the VJM08 on Tuesday, but he showed his ability by keeping Mercedes at the top of the timesheets for much of the following day, despite not being fully recovered from whatever ailed him.
With Hamilton and Rosberg seemingly ensconced at Mercedes – even though the former remains locked in ongoing contract talks – Wehrlein knows that he might have to bide his time before a seat becomes available, but the 20-year old is equally aware that he still needs to convince the powers that be that he is the man to take over.
After a single year in F3 yielded second overall in the European series, Wehrlein was plucked to join the Mercedes fold in DTM, initially with the same Mucke Motorsport team that ran him in single-seaters and, latterly, with the more powerful HWA squad. Results, however, have yet to come on a regular basis, with a lone victory in the 2014 Lausitzring round not being matched with anything better than a fifth place. Second in the opening double-header race of 2015 is a promising start, but the youngster knows there is a long way to go.
“Definitely, my target is to drive one day in F1, but this year I'm driving DTM so that's my main focus,” he claimed, “We really want to be competitive there, win races and maybe the championship because, the last two years, we were a bit struggling. So DTM, definitely, is my main focus as I have to bring results and do my best. Then, hopefully, you will see me soon in F1.”
