Lewis Hamilton kept his name atop the timesheets during second free practice for the Monaco Grand Prix, though the onset of rain would keep track action to a relative minimum.

With increasingly threatening clouds looming overhead as FP2 got underway, Hamilton was able to quickly put in the fastest lap of the weekend with a 1min 17.192secs lap, followed promptly by Nico Rosberg's 1min 17.932secs attempt.

However, with the rain beginning to fall just 25mins in the session, it was sufficient to call time on any meaningful track action until the chequered flag, save for the odd wet weather lap.

Even so, the finishing order took on a familiar look beyond the Mercedes 1-2, with Sebastian Vettel and Kimi Raikkonen in third and fourth for Ferrari, while Red Bull and Toro Rosso confirmed its strong morning session with Daniil Kvyat, Carlos Sainz and Max Verstappen filling positions fifth, sixth and seventh respectively.

Rounding out the top ten, Fernando Alonso, Nico Hulkenberg and Romain Grosjean filled eight, ninth and tenth place, keeping Williams out of the picture in 12th and 13th with Felipe Massa and Valtteri Bottas.

The session suffered a brief red flag early on when Roberto Merhi lost his Manor on the bump coming into the chicane, collecting the outside barrier before coming to a halt.

Track action resumes on Saturday with FP3 and the crucial qualifying session.
