Fernando Alonso is hoping the onset of rain has played into the hands of McLaren-Honda after no team was able to run the super-soft tyres on the first day of action in Monaco.

There are high hopes that McLaren will be challenging for its first points of the 2015 F1 season and having ended the day with the eighth fastest time, Alonso is additionally hopeful the emergence of rain will benefit the team.

Indeed, though rain isn't forecast for the race, with teams not able to use the super-soft rubber, Alonso believes that will be an advantage for McLaren come qualifying.

"I don't have the crystal ball to see into the future, but I will try to do my best on Saturday," he said. "The conditions are changing and nobody had the chance to run the super-soft.

"That is probably good news for us because it will be some kind of unknown situation for everyone in qualifying and we can take advantage of the difficulties for everyone. Let's hope to have a good Saturday and a good grid position."
